I had a sucessful kidney/pancreas transplant 5 years ago. Even then if my Mom who is a nurse hadn't been with me in the transplant hospital I'm not sure I would be here right now. It is alarming to find out so many transplant patients have the same horrible experiences that I have. Every transplant patient needs to realize that ALL doctors are human and are only using educated guesses to treat us. You have to learn every single thing you can about your body, meds, side effects, everything! Don't be afraid to do your own research online and in medical books and make the doctors listen to you when you find something. If your doctor isn't open to listening to your ideas about your treatment - get a different doctor. After almost dying more times than I care to remember because of blind faith in people who are suppose to know how to treat us, I have finally found a doctor who listens and my health isn't great, but it's a lot better than it has been for years.

Your tips for first time dialysis should be given to every new patient. Thanks!

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I will be sure my husband reads what you have written before he starts dialysis -- current GFR 11, so it will probably be soon. Excellent information, concise, straight-forward and well written. You are most likely saving lives, and certainly making it much easier for many to cope w/ ESRD.

Great info! Our oldest son Levi has had a transplanted kidney since he was 4yrs old. He is now 17 and the transplant has failed in the last month. We are journying to The Childrens Hosp in Denver, about an hours drive, three times a week for hemo. Before, when his native kidneys failed, we did PD at home for 2-1/2 years. Hang in there and we will do the same- Cliff.

Hope you are doing well ! Happy New Year!
Ever so often I stop by your website to read about a disease and it's treatments etc.
I'm borderline dialysis/transplant.
Wish you well in the new year.
